Research

The broad aim of the DEEP Center is to understand how professional development for engineering instructors affects their teaching. Participation in DEEP research is voluntary.

Aims

Our research aims are to assess improvements on the knowledge of microaggressions, racial attitudes, and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) instructional behaviors. Through evaluation, we will provide information on implementation, effectiveness, outcomes, sustainability and achievement.

DEEP seeks participation from:

  • Tenure and non-tenure stream faculty and postdoctoral fellows
  • Instructors of undergraduate non-lab engineering courses
  • Faculty andinstructors from any engineering department
  • Undergraduates in courses taught by participating faculty and instructors

Activities

  • Completion of at least one DEI engineering instruction workshop
  • Online questionnaires pre- and post-workshop
  • Recording of two classroom lectures (prior to and after workshops for observation)
  • Collection of teaching materials (e.g. syllabus and/or lecture plans)
  • 60-minute focus group session or interviews
